9th June 2010 - Grade Presentations
The students and instructors at Tring Martial Arts celebrated the results of a recent grade examination which took place at this busy and popular Martial Arts club this week. In total 48 students took part in grade exams for various belts in Kickboxing and with a 99% pass rate the standard was extremely high. Every student worked really hard and pushed themselves to the limit.
Congratulations to Glenn Tanner (16) and Henry Nash (21) for being promoted by Double Grade to Purple and Yellow belts respectively.
The highlight of the presentation evening was for Jonathan Williams (44) (pictured on the left next to Chris) who was presented with his 1st Degree Black Belt in Kickboxing, by Chief Instructor Christopher Allen, who himself recently earned his 3rd Degree Black Belt in the same style.
When Jonathan was asked about his grade exam he commented, "it was a long and brutal day, but well worth it!" Christopher also added, "we invited 5 senior black belts to sit on the panel, they were very impressed by Jonathan and I was extremely proud to introduce him as a Black Belt candidate and now am even more pleased to be presenting him with his 1st Degree Black Belt, he has worked extremely hard!" Jonathan is now looking forward to taking up teaching responsibilities at the club and training towards his 2nd Degree.
29th & 30th May - UKMA in Cornwall
On Saturday 29th May, Christopher Allen our Chief Instructor attended a black belt grade examination where he successfully passed his 3rd Dan black belt in Kickboxing. "The exam lasted seven hours and was a very tough experience, thankfully my training and conditioning plan that I started four months ago allowed me to complete the event and be able to walk out the door at the end (just!)", commented Chris. Traditionally, Chris will not divulge the full details of the grading panel, as only Black Belt are privy to this information, however he did speak of endless squats, press ups, sit ups and having to spar against a 6th degree cage fighter, and being asked to give an impromptu demonstration of Tai Chi at the end, so you can be assured he received a tough exam!!
From Left, Master Haydn Bridgeland (4th Degree Kung Fu), Master Mitch Simpson (3rd Dan Freestyle Karate), Master James Latus (3rd Dan Freestyle Taekwondo), Master Chris Allen (3rd Dan Kickboxing), Master Darren Bate (6th Dan Mixed Martial Arts).
On Sunday 30th May, Christopher Allen taught another UKMA Krav Maga course at the Memorial Church Hall in Newquay. Unfortunately, many of the expected delegates took the grading the day before and didn't show up, but 8 students still attended this 6 hour course covering Level 1 (White to Yellow) and Level 2 (Orange to Green) in the UKMA Krav Maga syllabus. All participants passed the gruelling pressure test at the end of the course. Well done to all
15th May 2010 - Black Belt Grading Panel
Two members of UKMA were invited to take their Black Belt grading today, Jonathan Williams Assistant Instructor at Tring Martial Arts and Joe Boake from Tring Tai Chi. On what was an exceptionally hot day Jonathan and Joe were put through their paces, Joe (grading for 5th Dan Tai Chi) had to demonstrate a number of forms from Chen Man Chiing to Bagua repeatedly whilst Jonathan (grading for 1st Dan Kickboxing) was being pummelled and worked to the edge of exhaustion through sparring, physical exercises and pad work.
Christopher Allen, Chief Instructor of UKMA (6th Dan) was joined on the panel by colleague and friend Master James Latus of Kernow Martial Arts (3rd Dan Freestyle Taekwondo), Mitch Simpson (2nd Dan Taekwondo), Elaine Latus (1st Dan Freestyle Taekwondo) and Daphne Wright (1st Dan Black Belt Kickboxing).
Congratulations to both Joe and Jonathan, their grades will be officially presented on Monday 7th June 2010.

On Friday 9th April, Peter Willmore took charge of his first kickboxing class. Peter has been a member of our IDP (Instructor Development Programme) and training at TMA for nearly 3 years. "I felt that it was the right time to pass teaching responsibilities to Peter and am really pleased that he has taken up the challenge in such a positive way!", commented Chris.

Look out for this new logo on our great new range of TKM clothing which will be launched very soon!
"I decided to ditch the brown t-shirts and camo trousers which were requirements of our membership to Commando Krav Maga, now we are independant of them our uniform will consist of black military trousers and t-shirts, plus we'll have hooded sweatshirts, jackets and hats as well".
For more information on the new class see our KRAV MAGA page
29th March 2010 - Master Wang Xun Seminar Leeds
Chris returned from Leeds exhausted but elated after a highly rewarding and enjoyable Tai Chi seminar taken by Master Wang Xun of Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China. Master Wang is currently in the UK studying Bio Chemistry, and the opportunity to train with a master of his ability is very rare indeed. Chris commented afterwards, "Wang Xun is a genuine treasure in the world of Martial Arts. The opportunity to train with such an skilled Master would only normally be possible by travelling to Henan province in China, the birth place of Shaolin Martial Arts. The fact that Master Wang is currently (and only for a short time) living in the UK and is willing to share his knowledge with us is an opportunity never to be missed".

7th March 2010 - TMA compete at Chesham Kickboxing Tournament - 2 Wins & 3 Draws!!!
On Sunday 7th March TMA took its team to Chesham to compete in a Kickboxing tournament, the first fight saw Jenni Cannon (17) taking on strong opposition to end the fight in a draw. The next was Tony Blunt who won his fight against an experienced fighter in the veteran category. Up next was Ben Hancock who drew his fight against a tough competitor who was a real challenge. The next fight saw Glenn Tanner (16) take on a slightly older lad who was taller than Glenn, but through his skill, fitness and attitude Glenn defeated his opponent in a convincing way. The last fight of the day was Peter Willmore who fought against a tough challenger but despite our belief he should have won, the judges ruled a draw. Well done to all who took part!!
Also a special mention must go to Martin Ritter, Peter Gardiner, Louise Cannon, Stephen Tanner and family and Bill Gascoyne and son who made the effort to attend and support the team. Their support was excellent and everyone felt part of a very special team!
Film of each fight was taken by Martin and will be shown during sparring on Wednesday 10th March 2010 at 8:45pm - would all fighters please attend for post fight analysis.
Also, the photo taken is okay, but if anyone has a better one please email it to Chris.
5th March 2010 - News from Corporate Martial Arts
Long time client Boxwood Consulting Ltd from central london kicked off their year with another foundation event for new members of staff this week.
On Tuesday 2nd March Christopher Allen Chief Instructor was joined by newly appointed instructor Peter Willmore to deliver a cracking Kickboxing session which saw the Boxwood group learn how to kick and punch, and then apply the techniques learnt on our range of striking equipment.
Chris and Peter returned on Friday 5th March 2010, to take the group outside for an envigorating Tai Chi session. At 7am with the sun rising the temperature was a balmy -4°C.
On past events the group were able to stick out the cold, but today the wind chill got the better of everyone and the last half of the Tai Chi session was finished inside.
We are looking forward to future events with Boxwood Consulting, we just hope it will be warmer next time.

Monday 8th February 2010
Kickbox Kids had a special visitor today in the shape of Fire Fighter Carl Hursthouse from Blue Watch in London. Carl is a member of Tring Martial Arts, who lives in Wendover and works in central london.
Carl joined the KBK class that his son also attends to give a seminar on fire safety.
The kids really enjoyed the drop and roll exercise where they learnt how to put themselves out if their clothing caught fire. They also learnt what to do in the event of a house fire, how to attract attention and how to leave their rooms in they smell smoke.
The kids left with a bundle of stickers, badges, wrist bands and other fun stuff.
"I think it was one of the most enjoyable talks we have had at KBK, the kids loved trying on the uniform, but they may have to grow a bit before it fits properly", said Chris afterwards.
1st February 2010 - Student of the Month January 2010
Congratulatons to the first receipiant of the coveted Student of the Month award at Tring Martial Arts.
Ryan Smith pictured here impressed everyone with the sheer effort and determination he puts into his training.
Well done and keep it up Ryan!!
23rd January 2010 - Student of the Month update
Following our chief instructors holiday in November and December, the student of the month awards for those months weren't presented, so once the snow had cleared away Chris presented the awards to Charlie Woodbridge (left) and Ben Hancock (right) for November and December. Both students impressed the panel with their dedication to their training and for the effort they applied at each and every session they attend. Well Done to both students!
12th January 2010 - Back to Normal
We hope that lessons can get back to normal and that no more snow threatens classes, yesterday evening we had a great turnout at all the classes, but please remember that as I live very close to the hall, unless due to extreme circumstances I will be running classes at TMA. So if you normally drive, but live within walking (or skiing) distance you can rest assured that classes will be available for you.
1st January 2010 - HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL STUDENTS, PARENTS, INSTRUCTORS AND FRIENDS
16th November 2009 - Grading Results TMA
Students who took part in the Tring Martial Arts grading assessment were presented with their results tonight. Well done to all who took part.
11th November 2009 - Student of the Month - Harrison Wright
Congratulations to Harrison Wright, who was awarded Student of the Month for October. Harrison really impressed the instructors by how well he coped with moving from Kickbox Kids to the main adult and junior classes. "He has really done well to integrate himself into the classes and works really hard, he's a remarkable student", commented Chris.
11th November 2009 - Tring Martial Arts - change of training times
We are delighted by the news that the Scouts have been granted change of use for the hall, and this means that Tring Martial Arts' future at the Grove Road venue is secure. Despite objections from a minority of neighbours, the council approved the application and we can all now move forward. In order to facilitate the approval of the change of use, all users of the hall have unfortunately had to make compromises, and therefore TMA has reluctantly agreed not to use the hall on Sunday's or Bank Holidays.
"It is a shame that we can't use the hall on Sunday's, but we are now allowed to use the hall on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights until 10pm, and on Saturday mornings. So from January 2010 we will have a new timetable making the most use of the time available at the hall", said Chris, "Until the new timetable is published, Tring Martial Arts will use the existing timetable with the exception of Sunday classes. I am dissappointed however for all the students who only trained on a Sunday, especially those I work with closely in our schools programme, I hope that they will come along now in the evenings instead".
10th November 2009 - Another successful Tai Chi class
Today saw the end of the first ever Tai Chi class organised by the staff of HBOS in Aylesbury. The new term starts in January and is open to all HBOS employees. The Tai Chi class was organised by the staff, as a way to help them unwind and cope with the very real stresses of their industry.
9th November 2009 - In Memory of Rose Fowler
The members of Chesham Tai Chi class at the McMinn Centre and their instructor Chris Allen were very sad to hear that Rose Fowler (82) passed away quietly at hospital yesterday. Rose was a member of Chris's class for almost two years and Chris commented, "Rose was a terrific person whom I was lucky enough to know all be it for a short time, my thoughts are with her family at this time".
25th October 2009 - Last Public Krav Maga Course for 2009
The last public krav maga course for 2009 was held today. Well done to all participants who passed the 6 hour course and pressure test, which consisted of 4 minutes of non-stop attacks from two opponents. The students trained both indoors and outside, within the tight confines of the changing area and even in the dark and semi light.
"I was recently asked why do we train outside - simple, we need to practice defending ourselves in every possible scenario, being outside on rough ground, being in a dark room or in a confined space is just when you need to use these skills. Training in a sterile hall, in an environment that is controlled is not realistic", commented Lv 3 Instructor, Chris Allen.
12th October 2009 - Student of the Month - August and September 2009
Student of the Month for September has been awarded to Bill Gascoigne, for his tremendous hard work and dedication to his training. It came as quite a shock to Bill, who was obviously not expecting to be recognised in this way, which is a testament to his humilty and good character. Well Done Bill!!
Also, we were unable to publicise the Student of the Month Award for August, which was presented to Vicky Blunt and Jessica Barrett. Due to a problem with our camera, the picture didn't come out very well, so they happily (after encouragement) posed with their award at our recent photo shoot. Vicky and Jess have worked extremely hard and are very committed, it was for these reasons they were nominated and awarded Student of the Month, August 2009. Well done Vicky and Jess!!
12th October 2009 - Special Visitors to Kickbox Kids
Kickbox Kids had some special visitors, Chris and Martin from Tring Police Station.
Chris Allen (centre) pictured with PCSO Chris (left) and PCSO Martin (right).
Despite a few comments regarding the fashion police arriving to arrest Chris for crimes against fashion, the two PCSO's joined this evenings Kickbox Kids session to talk about personal safety and what to do if the kids need to get help.
The class also discussed the reprecussions of dialing 999 when we don't need too, what is an emergency call and what it is like to be in the Police.
The childen got to ask many questions, alot of them were very good, but Martin and Chris also dealt with a few bizarre questions about dead bodies, do they carry guns and do they run after baddies - which the pair handled with great humour!.
The KBK children then showed off their prowess with a demonstration of Kickboxing and Shadowboxing.
"I would like to sincerely thank both Martin and Chris for coming into our class, the children really enjoyed their visit and I believe it was a valuable opportunity for them to understand the vital role that the Police play in our local community", commented Chris Allen afterwards.
25th, 26th, 27th September 2009 - Team TMA crack the Cornish Coast
Christopher Allen and Daphne Wright (both black belts) from Tring Martial Arts took part in the Atlantic Coast Challenge 2009 which started on Friday 25th September in the glorious sunshine in Cornwall. Now in it's 3rd year the ACC attracted over 200 runners. The challenge series concept is based on completing 3 coastal marathons in 3 days; in this case running or walking from near Padstow to Lands End over some of the most scenic but testing terrain the UK has to offer.
Daphne Wright who earned her 1st dan black belt in May 2008 has been training intensively for this three day event, and started well on the first day.
Day 1. The runners, were set off with a staggered start and had to pass through checkpoints at Mawgan Porth, Newquay and Crantock beach before the day 1 finish at Perranporth. The checkpoints fed and watered the competitors with everything from filled rolls to energy bars and cups of tea as well as acting as safety check ins to ensure all were on course. Daphne finished in 6th place in the womens field with a time of 5hrs 23mins.
Day 2 started at Perranporth and moved onto checkpoints at Trevaunace Cove, Portreath and Godrivy before heading down the beach at Gwithian and back through Hayle to the finish at St Ives Bay holiday park It truly is a day of two halves with the relentless hills of the first two checkpoints giving way to the flatter stretch past Portreath; made challenging in a different way with the sandy stretch of Gwithian beach (3miles) and dunes coming right at the end. Daphne finished 10th place in the womens field with a time of 5hrs 50mins
Daphne pictured after completing day 2.
Day 3 started from Lelant Church near St Ives and would stretch around the Cornish coast to finish at Land's End but the final day had a sting in its tale, due to coastal erosion, we had to make an inland detour which would add another 4 miles onto the distance making this an ultra marathon!
After Checkpoint 1 at Zennor Church, the second CP on the cliffs between Zennor and Cape Cornwall was bathed in sunshine and once again provided some iconic photos of what this event is really all about. The terrain after CP 1 is some of the toughest you can find anywhere with some of it requiring light scrambling skills more than walking and running!
There were a few more retirements on day 3 due to the accumulated fatigue and also the debilitating nature of the terrain. Even so the vast majority kepy soldiering on stopping off at the beautiful Cape Cornwall at CP 3 to fuel up for the last push onto Lands End.
The times tell it all for day 3 with the fast guys taking close to the 5 hour mark for the slightly extended route that totalled in the region of 30.5 miles.
Christopher took part in the third day, having never run a marathon before and certainly never training for an ultra 30 mile race. Both Daphne and Chris completed the tough challenged in a time of 9 hrs, and overall Daphne finished 75th (48th in the womens field) and Chris finished 112th out of a field of 200 runners, 20 of whom didn't finish.
Chris and Daphne would like to thank all those who have sponsered team TMA, and have raised over £400 for Cancer Research.
18th September 2009 - Farewell, Goodbye and Keep In Touch!!
We'd like to wish Camilla, Ilona, Laura and Steph the very best of luck and best wishes for the future. The fab four are off to pastures new to continue their education at University. Camilla and Ilona (both 21) are off to the Royal Holloway to study media and acting; Steph (21) is off to Oxford Brooke University to study accountancy and Laura (18) is off to Canterbury University to study teaching. All received a signed card and a M&S Voucher worth £10, which they all agreed (smiling) not to spend on alcoholic beverages.
Keep in touch!!
14th September 2009 - Sponsor Team TMA
We are hoping that all students would like to sponsor Chris and Daphne for their upcoming marathon(s) at the Atlantic Coast Challenge on 25th - 27th September. Daphne, 1st Dan Black Belt at TMA, has been focusing on her running since being promoted to 1st Dan in November 2008. She has been focused on ultra endurance events, and at the Atlantic Coast Challenge she will attempt to complete 3 marathons in 3 days, along the Cornish coast from Padstow to Land's End. Chris will be taking part on the third and final day on what will be his first ever marathon, "most people choose a relatively flat course on the road for their first marathon, such as London, but I may never run this distance again so I chose the very hard option of the coastal path"!
If you would like to sponsor Chris and Daphne, a form is available at Tring Martial Arts.
Another excellent performance by Tring Martial Arts students at the grading event was given today, the effort shown was top class, and with only one Re-take the standard was very high. To watch a video of the beginners taking part in their grading go to the video page or click here
11th and 14th August 2009 - News from Corporate Martial Arts - Boxwood Foundation Course
We were delighted to once again be working with the Boxwood Company, this consulting firm has really supported us over the last two years so it was a real pleasure to take 8 new employees through the Kickboxing and Tai Chi experience as part of their enrolment week.
"I find it really encouraging that Boxwood are still employing new staff, it seems to me that they always choose the best individuals to represent them and this was proven to me at our sessions. The new staff members were highly focused and took up the Kickboxing and Tai Chi activities in a very positive manner", said Chris, Chief Instructor of Corporate Martial Arts.
The foundation course took its usual format, a challenging and energetic Kickboxing activity lasting one hour from 7am on the 11th August. In this activity, the team learnt how to throw correct punches and kicks, "we even had time for a Reverse Round House kick, which is quite a complex kick and to address some self defence issues, we trained a classic Krav Maga (military) gun dissarm which they found challenging and fun", said Chris.
The Tai Chi activity always takes place on the last day of their foundation course, its a great activity which helped the team re-energise and focus on the last day of their training. "I was really pleased to see how the new employee's and the course conveynors (Chris and Derek who have attended a few previous events) got on with the form. The Jade Mountain 8 Step form is short enough to be learnt within 30 minutes using our progressive teaching system. The delegates learn quickly and then we repeat the form enough times to ensure they can remember it. Form cards are available, and the Boxwood team certainly used theirs", commented Chris.
We are looking forward to working with Boxwood again in the very near future.
31st July 2009 - Student of the Month - July 09
Student of the month for July has been presented to Marc Dancer (17), who joined us almost two years ago and has grown into an integral and popular member of the club. Marc has a unique sense of humour and a very honest character and we have seen him grow in confidence and ability. Well done Marc!!
The return of this popular Summer Camp was very well received and enjoyed by the students who took part. Two days of great fun and activity followed by successful gradings for all who took part. Well done to all students!
19th July 2009 - Tring Martial Arts Race for Life Team
This weekend our very own Race For Life team took part in a race in St.Albans and raised well over £500 for the Institute of Cancer Research. We sponsored our team with their very own Pink t-shirts, and despite the odd shower, it was a very enjoyable day for both the runners and spectators. "One of my nieces, Olivia (3) took part as well, she marshalled her carriers, Daphne and Helen very well from her comfy backpack position", commented Chris.
A big thank you must also be paid to Julie Howell for organising the team!
Well done to all!!!
15th July 2009 - Tring Living Magazine at Tring Martial Arts
The editor and publisher of the highly popular quarterly magazine Tring Living joined TMA for a Kickboxing class this evening. Editor Claire Spake pictured on left next to Chris Allen of Tring Martial Arts and Sandra Smith (publisher) on right - took part in a high energy session as part of their upcoming article on Tring Martial Arts for their next edition.
Sandra commented afterwards, "Kickboxing was much more of an aerobic work-out than I'd imagined and great fun! Both Claire and I felt great afterwards, if rather exhausted! The group were friendly and relaxed and made us feel very welcome. If you're stressed-out, this is the perfect antidote!!
6th July 2009 - Tring School Kickboxing
Tring School Kickboxing held four sessions today as part of the Schools activity week. Throughout the day over 80 kids took part in the four sessions, with a great amount of feedback and many new students turning up to the evening classes at Tring Martial Arts. The organiser, Miss Appleton said, "thanks for a great day Chris, the students and teaching staff were very impressed and the feedback from the students has been very positive".
To book a school Kickboxing, Self defence or Tai Chi seminar contact Chris on 0845 094 8805.
5th July 2009 - Kickbox Kids Grading
After a great deal of hard work throughout a hot summer, the Kickbox Kids classes held their end of term grading today. Overall the effort shown was very good with 95% of students attaining their next grade. Students who did not pass will be allowed to re-take their grade at the Summer Camp or after the next term.
29th June 2009 - Student of the Month - Robin Bembridge
A huge congratulations and well done to Robin Bembridge for the hard work, focus and dedication he has applied to his training.
28th June 2009 - Kubotan Course - Tring Martial Arts
Some students of TMA were entertained and bruised at our highly popular Kubotan course, the Kubotan is essentially a key fob which can be used for self defence purposes. See the gallery section for more photos.
12th June 2009 - UKMA Tai Chi Demonstration - Hospice of St.Francis, Berkhamsted
Photo taken at the beautiful Zen garden at the Hospice.
Christopher Allen - Instructor at Tring and Chesham Tai Chi
Peter from Tring Tai Chi
Barbara, Ruth, Sheila and Les from Chesham Tai Chi
On 12th June 2009, we were invited to attend a garden party held in the beautiful grounds of the Hospice of St.Francis in Berkhamsted. The organiser asked if we could perform a demonstration of Tai Chi, and run a short session on Tai Chi for their staff and carers who were in attendance.
The Hospice of St Francis was founded in 1979, and employed its first nurse in 1980. Now the Hospice employs 65 nurses, six doctors and four therapists, as well as catering, fundraising and administration staff. We work with patients suffering terminal and life-limiting illnesses and their families, carers and loved ones.
They provide care for patients with serious or terminal illness. Many of our patients have cancer but we also look after patients with heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease and neurological disease, as well as cancer.
UK Martial Arts was delighted to be invited to attend, as part of the Hospice's Carers Week, which aimed to give carers and their families a range of activities and social events to support their own well being.
In attendance were students from our classes in Tring and Chesham, namely Peter from Tring Tai Chi and Sheila, Ruth, Barbara and Les from Chesham Tai Chi. They joined Chris, our chief instructor for a demonstration of the 24 Step Peking Style form, followed by a Jade Mountain 18 Step Taiji Sword Form demonstrated by Chris.
Chris then took 12 spectators through a series of simple tai chi moves to act as an introduction.

8th June 2009 - Fun in the Sun - Kickbox Kids
With the exceedingly hot weather, our Kickbox Kids got the opportunity to try out the now infamous Cup Balance activity that's normally the domain of adults and junior grades at grading examinations. They coped really well, especially because the cups were filled with cold water - only a few spills so well done to all.
Upcoming events for Kickbox Kids
TMA is now gearing up for the KBK Grading which will take place on Sunday 5th July at 12:15pm for 1 hour and also for the KBK Summer Camps, for more information on the Summer Camp, please click here - we are now starting to take enrolments from new students and already have 8 children on the list and we're limited to 20 spaces, so book now to avoid dissappointment.
31st May 2009 - Tring Krav Maga goes National
On a beautiful Sunday in Newquay, Cornwall, Tring Krav Maga instructor Chris Allen took 10 willing students of Kernow Martial Arts through the Level 1 Course. "It was a tough day, the weather was really hot and the hall soon got really sweaty! The students took to the course well and 8 of the 10 students who took part passed the course following the fitness and pressure test at the end of the day. This is a testament to the teaching of their Master, Mr James Latus, 3rd Degree TaeKwondo", commented Chris.
29th May 2009 - Chief Instructor promoted to Master
On the 29th May, Christopher Allen our Chief Instructor was awarded the rank of Master by his teacher Shihan Jon Alexander (9th Degree). "What impressed the instruction panel and myself was how Lois and Laura have remained committed to their training, attending at least twice per week and have an amazing down to earth attitude which hold them in good stead throughout both their training with us at TMA and their lives in general. I am particularly impressed by how they come in and get on with it, never complaining but also not afraid to ask questions, this shows great confidence and dedication!", commented Christopher Allen, Instructor at Tring Martial Arts.
Lois said, "I'm really thrilled to receive this award, and feel really inspired". Laura echoed Lois's statement saying, "Its great to be recognised and I am really pleased to receive the trophy".

I was very pleased that so many of the students could attend and I wish them a very enjoyable and safe trip".
If you would like to book Christopher to come to your school to run a self defence seminar for your children please contact the office on 0845 094 8805

The business exhibition was hosted by Archant one of the largest publishers in our area and was featured on Herts FM radio. "It was a long day but we had alot of interest from companies especially for self defence training for their staff", commented Chris. Chris was also interviewed by the Hertfordshire Business Independant and Herts FM Radio.
22nd February 2009 - Grading at Tring Martial Arts
The first grading of 2009 for students at Tring Martial Arts saw 43 students take part in the assessment. Due to numbers the day was split into two groups, ungraded and White Belts and Yellow Belts and above.
We were also very fortunate to have a large panel of examiners which included Daphne (Black Belt 1st Dan), Kevin (Brown Belt 2nd Black Tag); Pip, Henry and Annabelle (Brown Belt 1st Black Tag) and Chris (Chief Instructor / Examiner, Black Belt 2nd Dan). A big thank you to all the panel members for assisting on the day, especially to Annabelle for her DJing talents with the stereo!
The first section of the assessment started at 12:15pm for the ungraded and White belt students and lasted 45 minutes, with ungraded students finishing after 30 minutes. "I was really impressed by the level of effort shown on the first part of the examination, everyone worked really hard and I can't wait to read the results sheets when I get home", comment Chris afterwards.
The second section, which included Jonathan Williams taking his Brown Belt 2nd Black Tag, Jenni Cannon, Paul Garrett and Joshua Marshall-Dear taking their first Brown Belt gradings. Also saw a large section of students taking Purple, Blue, Green and Orange.
For the students taking Orange it would mark their progress from beginner grades to intermediate grades so the pressure was high, and they certainly worked hard!
The new format also saw a different event timetable for the grading, "in the past we've tried all different ways to run the day, with everyone finishing together or starting together and finishing according to their grade times, it was a pity that some students who finished after 60 minutes didn't stay on to support their colleagues as the students taking Brown Belt had quite a challenge to overcome", commented Chris, "every grading assessment is different and next time we may run it another way - I like to keep people on their toes!"
Grade Presentations will take place on Monday 3rd March 2009 at 7:15pm at HQ.

24th November 2008 - Tring Martial Arts Grade Presentations
Tring Martial Arts, held its Winter grade assessment on 16th November 2008, the turnout at this event was amazing with 48 students taking part. "The quality and hardwork shown on the day is a testament to our students dedication to their training and the club, they all performed superbly and I was very pleased with their performances", said Chris who led the assessment panel as Chief Examiner.
The panel consisted of two brown belts, Kevin and Pip, newly promoted 1st Dan Black Belt Daphne Wright and 2nd Dan Black Belt Chris Allen.
The effort shown by the students was very high, many achieved top marks and received the coveted Red Tag to be sewn on their belts as evidence of their top marks, there was a even a couple of Double Grades. "It's always pleasing to me that we produce high quality students and their marks on the day proved this, 80% of students achieved an A Level pass, which means they scored very highly on their assessment, the remaining students reached O level pass, which is certainly an acheivement they should be proud of and highlights they need to practice in certain areas, we also had two Double Grades, Fiona Troon and Ilona Errington.
A Double Grade is an exceptional mark which essentially means they are promoted two belts instead of one due to their performance both on the day and in training", commented Chris after the presentations.
The presentation evening was also the opportunity for Chris to formally promote Daphne Wright to the rank of Black Belt 1st Dan. Daphne was watched by her parents Anne and Bill and said it was a very proud moment for them. Daphne's Black Belt was embroidered with her name and club in gold lettering and the coveted bars on each end to signify her grade, she was also presented with her A3 certificate.

1st November 2008 - First Black Belt Award
Saturday 1st November was the culmination of almost four years of training for Daphne Wright-Allen. Daphne was one of the first students of Tring Martial Arts, she attended the first ever lesson back in June 2005 and has been training consistently twice a week since then. At first Daphne only intended to train and not grade, but within a few weeks she became convinced that she wanted to work towards achieving black belt and work hard she did!
Black Belt grading panels are normally shrouded in secrecy, with only fellow black belts able to attend, UKMA continued this tradition by inviting two other black belts to assist Chris Allen, our chief instructor, with the grading. Joining Chris, all the way from Cornwall was his good friends from Kernow Martial Arts, James and Angela Latus. James Latus holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt and his wife holds a 1st degree Black Belt.
The grading session lasted 4 hours and consisted of a 6 mile run, light contact sparring, demonstrations of technique and lots of fitness drills, it was a tough grading and she did very well indeed!
26th October 2008 - Commando Krav Maga
Chris Allen, Chief Instructor of UKMA took a whole week out of teaching to attend an Instructors Boot Camp between 22nd October and 26th October 2008. With candidates from Italy, France, Norway, Sweden, Ireland and the UK, this Instructors Boot Camp was had a truly european feel. "There were approximately 20 candidates on this course, two of whom dropped out towards the end and two instructors one from Italy and the other from the UK didn't pass the course, which although dissappointing for them, proves that Moni is interested in producing quality instructors to teach Commando Krav Maga", said Chris.
Each day the candidates started early in the morning and finished around 5:30pm to 6pm, "it was very intensive, we had many fitness drills combined with lots of knowledge and practicing of new techniques. Every day we drilled the new techniques again and again both in slow motion and full speed until we were fully versed and confident in them. But understanding the techniques is only one part of the course, we have to demonstrate we can teach them as well", commented Chris.
The final day consisted of a theory test, fitness test, skills test and a final pressure test which lasted 7 minutes. " I was really looking forward to the final day of testing, especially the final pressure test upon which my status of instructor would ultimately be based, it would be a chance to prove my knowledge and skills in a high pressure environment. (See picture below)
It was certainly a high pressure environment, Chris was faced with three opppnents all the same size as him and one bigger than him (Alexi is the guy you can see in the gallery section being slapped). Chris had 7 minutes to defend himself from continuous attacks from these opponents using Knives, Guns, Fists and Feet with 100% power, speed and no cooperation from any of the attackers. "I survived, it wasn't pretty or flash, but in real life it won't be either. I happy and relieved and Moni commented to me that he was very pleased with my efforts as I showed real fighting spirit.
Chris intended to add to his existing self defence knowledge and this course not only gave him more skills but also challenged some of his perceptions and existing skills, forcing him to change his mindset on the validity of some techniques, "for many years I had been a strong advocate of some techniques and routines that simply do not work, this course changed me in many ways and I feel that I can now truly offer reality based self defence that is simple and easy to learn".
Check out the new Tring CKM page here and look out for our new public course in January 09.
12th October 2008 - Nunchaku Course
Tring Martial Arts, the HQ for all UKMA clubs held its first ever Nunchaku course which was co-taught by Chris Allen, Chief Instructor and Peter Willmore Kickboxing Coach. With Chris focusing on the traditional blocks, strikes and trapping techniques that can be employed with the Nunchucks, it fell to Peter to educate everyone on the tricks, spins and combinations of which he is so well practised. "Peter is fantastic on the Nunchucks and practices every other day, it was a pleasure to hand this section over to him, just so that I could watch!", commented Chris afterwards. Thank you to everyone who took part!
Special Thanks must also go to Tim Chester, father of Annabelle, who lent his professional eye and camera prowess to filming the event. Tim, who is a cameraman with Sky Television filmed the "Peter doing his thing" movie which can be seen on the Videos page.

It was a pleasure to be working with the Boxwood team again, this time we won the contract to teach the entire company Tai Chi at their annual training academy which was held at the beautiful Ashridge estate in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.
Working alongside Chris Allen, the Chief Instructor of UK Martial Arts / Corporate Martial Arts, was Peter Willmore and Stuart Miller, both qualified assistant instructors with UKMA.
As Tai Chi is best practiced outside and to accommodate the numbers we had decided to use the beautiful South lawn, with an impressive view of the main house. Thankfully the weather was fine on all three days and my team and I were able to teach the group a short form style of Tai Chi. We were even able to get everyone in touch with their Chi through some really energizing Chi Kung (breathing) exercises”, said Chris.
"They concentrated very well, listened intently and their focus was considerable even at 7am in the morning”, commented Peter Willmore, “I agree with Peter, “added Stuart, “the whole team seemed positively enthused by their practice and I was surprised as to how keen they were to get the form right”.
Juhi Srivastava, part of the organising committee from Boxwood commented after the event, “Chris and his team were great, they took 60 complete novices and gently introduced us into the world of Tai Chi, (no easy feat at 7am!). It was an enjoyable and energising start to our demanding 3 day programme”.
1st August 2008 - Student of the Month - July
Congratulations to Peter Willmore for being awarded Student of the Month for July. Peter continues to train hard and attends regularly, he has made great strides in his understanding of technique and has particularly improved his sparring. It will also offer members of the Instructor Development Programme with the opportunity to earn good money helping us to deliver these courses, so I'm very pleased with the development of Corporate Martial Arts and am excited about its future", said Chris Allen, Chief Instructor.

7th July - St Columba's End of Term Demo - St. Albans
Tuesday night saw 6 of the regular students take part in the demonstration, which was hoped would raise interest for the new term. The hall was literally packed with spectators from all houses and classes, and many of the teaching staff were also on hand to see the battle of the teachers, between Mr Ricketts and Mr Smith.
The demonstration matches with both students and teachers, alongside the demonstration of Krav Maga Self Defence given by Chris Allen, the instructor of St. Columbas Kickboxing club proved very popular and was very well received indeed. Ben Ricketts said afterwards:-
"Fantastic! Feedback from the boys and staff has been great and it's generated a lot of interest for next year... here's to a long and prosperous future for kickboxing at Columba's! I was also really impressed with the way you ran the demo - it was very obvious you've done a good few before and it appeared slick and professional and keep the crowd's interest for the full half hour. Thank you".
The end of term demonstration marked a sad time for one of our regular students, Ben Ricketts popular TMA student and Kickboxing coordinator for St. Columbas school (seen hear kicking the bag) is leaving to pursue a teaching post in Thailand, UKMA would like to thank him for starting the club at this school, for his dedication to his own training and the best of luck in his new life in Thailand - hey what a great place to continue your training!!!

28th June - Little Chalfont Village Show
As part of UKMA's commitment to supporting community based activities and as we are planning to open a Tai Chi and Kickboxing class in Little Chalfont, we were delighted when we were invited to take part in the Village Show this weekend.
As part of our attendance we performed a couple of displays for the benefit of the general public which were very well received and a big thank you must go to Ellick, Scott, Lucy, Kevin, Pete and Stuart for taking the time to come and be part of our demonstration team. Thanks also to Daphne and Lauren for their support.
The range of activites on offer at the Village show was diverse and many groups from the local area and further afield attended.
The organisers were very pleased with our efforts commenting, " My Team and I would like to thank you for the excellent shows of your Martial Arts expertise at The Little Chalfont Village Day and for the enthusiasm and commitment that you put into your Displays. I know it was much appreciated by our Visitors of all ages. I was at one of the primary schools in Little Chalfont earlier today. The Teacher had asked them to draw something about their Weekend - knowing that many would have been at Village Day - and I have to say that there were many drawings of your team in action!!.
As an Event Organiser - its also great to work with an organisation - that just gets on with it - doesn't demand real attention from the Organisers and at the end of the day puts on a first class and very enjoyable activity. So many many thanks to you and your Team".
Also, thanks to the Viking Warriors Matt, Daniel and Mark for lending us their weapons and showing us what it was like to be a Viking in days gone by, although I think one of our group took it a little seriously!

18th June - UKMA selected by McDonalds to help Support Kung Fu Panda
Following our work to help support the new Power Rangers TV Show Operation Overdrive, UKMA Club Tring Martial Arts teams up with McDonalds to give Kids a "Kick Start" this summer.
Tring Martial Arts, based on Grove Road, Tring has teamed up with McDonalds in a drive to get kids active this summer.
The activity, supporting the launch of Dreamworks’ new animated film ‘Kung Fu Panda’, will see the provision of one-free-session of martial arts sessions to all McDonald’s customers between the ages of 5 and 12. The activity was set up by the British National Martial Arts Association (BNMAA) and is part of McDonald’s ongoing drive to encourage its customers to participate in an active lifestyle.
In the school holidays, it is imperative for kids to have something fun to do. The summer is a time when many sports clubs, including Martial Arts, have a downturn in their attendance rates – meaning more kids are out on the street.
UKMA Instructor Chris Allen from the Tring Martial Arts club says: “The Tring club is happy to be partnering with McDonalds on the ‘one child goes free’ activity – we hope this promotion helps to raise awareness of the benefits of martial arts to local young people. The Kung Fu Panda movie and this activity will allow the positive message and the benefits of martial arts spread across the country.”
Children learning a martial art has many benefits – extending far beyond being active, it teaches them discipline and respect for others. It is hoped the promotion will provide children with a positive first-time experience of martial arts and create the opportunity for a new hobby.
Paul Griffin, BNMAA Chairman, added: “Tring Martial Arts will be providing free lessons to all McDonalds customers between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. This is a great way to empower children to become involved in an active lifestyle as well as communicating the benefits of martial arts as a fun disciplined activity for the younger generation. I am extremely pleased that McDonalds are promoting their association with the Kung Fu Panda movie in such a positive way.
Alistair Macrow, McDonald’s Marketing Director, said: “McDonald’s already has a long-standing reputation for supporting grassroots coaching in football and this is an ideal opportunity to extend this focus on coaching into new sports. This is the first time we have worked with the British National Martial Arts Association and are very excited about supporting the good work they do.”
Finally some of our new equipment has started to arrive at Tring, for the benefit of all its students. Amongst the new equipment we have Slam Man, a Dumbell and Barbell Set and a Floor to Ceiling Ball. "By continuing to provide new equipment for our students we can make sure we deliver our trademark "interesting and never repetative lessons" that have become so popular", said Chris as he emptied the seventh bag of sand into Slam Man's base, "it will be worth the effort when I smack this thing a few times and it doesn't topple over"!

28th May 2008 - Student of the Month & Grade Awards
Congratulations to Julie Howell for being awarded Student of the Month for May 2008. Julie originally started training with Tring Martial Arts once a week with a friend, now she regularly attends a minimum of two classes per week, sometimes three. Julie joined with no intention of taking grade assessments, as this is strictly optional, but having seen other students develop and progress now wishes to start grading and we welcome her decision. When Julie first began her training she liked the fact that there is no pressure to grade, the classes were very friendly and the opportunity to get fit was very high - Congratulations Julie!!
Also on 28th May 2008 grade awards were presented to students of Tring Martial Arts, UKMA. With over 30 grades presented the level of performance was extremely high with several double grades being awarded. A complete list of grade results will be available on this site soon!
24th & 25th May 2008 - International Training Weekend - Chris Allen awarded Honour!
Over the bank holiday weekend, Chris Allen Chief Instructor and newly appointed Assistant Instructor Kevin Bettles attended Black Belt International and BNMAA's International Training Weekend, which saw delegates attending from Europe and the UK. The ITW offers instructors and assistants the opportunity to meet, attend government recognised courses in Health & Safety, First Aid, Child Protection and Coaching.
Over the weekend, both Chris and Kevin attended and passed the First Aid course, "I try to make sure that I renew my First Aid training at least every other year, this ensures that I am up to date with the latest procedures and guidelines, every time I take a first aid course something has changed, and this year was no exception!" commented Chris.
Kevin also got the opportunity to take his level 1 coaching course, which he passed and is looking forward to future courses in health & safety and child protection.
The highlight of the weekend was the Gala Dinner, attended by some 250 martial arts instructors, assistants and students. For Chris, the most exciting part of the Gala Dinner was the award for Dedication and Commitment to Martial Arts, that was presented to Chris for his hard work in the development and promotion of martial arts in his local community. "I'm really chuffed to be recognised by my peers in this way, teaching martial arts is a passion and seeing my students develop over time is a great boost, but an award like this is tremendous and has given me such a boost!" said Chris.
On Sunday, Chris had the opportunity to meet and take part in several workshops including White Crane Kung Fu, Defendo (a form of self defence) and Dynamic Kicking with Emma Elmes of White Dragon XMA team (pictured). "I can't wait to bring back the skills I have learnt for the benefit of the clubs. I thought I new all the pain compliance techniques, but the Defendo course opened my eyes to some new ones, and I know they hurt because I had them done to me, ouch!!"
If any students or assistant instructors, coaches or class assistants are interested in attending the next ITW, it will be held in May, contact Chris for more info.

18th March 2008 - Lights, camera, action - UKMA approached to support new Martial Arts film in August 2008.
With our connections in the film industry, UKMA has been approached to support a new martial arts film that is due out in August this year, details are sketchy at present, but we do know that the film is being released in August and I've heard rumour it will be called RedBelt. This may involve some demonstrations of Martial Arts at cinema's and shopping centre's. Last year, UKMA was approached to support the Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie but we weren't in the position to supply any demonstration teams.
This year we would like to invite to apply to join all our Elite Demonstration Team (EDT). The EDT will train students in the use of weapons for display purposes or open hand styles for Demonstrations at film premier events, local fairs and shows and at other events around the county.
To apply to become a member of the EDT, students must have a UKMA Uniform (with UKMA Logos) and have either graded to Yellow Belt or have experience of another style of Martial Arts. Successful applicants will need to attend all EDT training sessions, and commit to practice in their own time. Ahead of each event, applicants will be assessed and candidates selected.
To apply for EDT membership, please visit the Documents & Forms Section and see the Classes Section at the bottom of the page. (You will need to login to access this document).

2nd March 2008 - Chris Allen's personal challenge
Chris Allen, pictured left took on a very personal challenge this weekend by taking part in the Milton Keynes Half Marathon (13.1miles).
"My main running experience until now has been to aid my Kickboxing and Martial Arts training, but with a 3 year gap between my 2nd Dan and 3rd Dan Black Belts I've taken on a few personal challenges to keep my fitness at the desired level. Last year I took part in a 10K, this year I decided to run a half marathon, and am looking forward to perhaps another half before the end of the year", commented Chris afterwards.
"Running 4 times per week as well as teaching full time in the day and evening and getting UKMA off the ground has been very tough, but I'm glad I found the time and put in the training and am very happy to have completed the course in 2hrs 22mins. I have been extremely lucky to have been supported and coached by my wife Daphne, who's done a lot of running in the last few years and has helped me no end, especially when it was cold, wet and horrible outside and I didn't want to go out for the training runs. Daphne did the Edinburgh Marathon last year and I couldn't complain about the mileage as she'd already done double the distance".
So what's next - Marathon - "errrr, maybe next year!"
