UKMA Tai Chi was established in 2005 by Chief Instructor Christopher Allen (right). Due to the popularity of our classes, Master Joe Boake (left) has joined UKMA as Senior Instructor to lead Chen Man Ch'ing T'ai Chi classes.
We offer two styles of T'ai Chi Ch'uan:-
24 Posture Yang Form and Chen Man Ch'ing Tai Chi.
What is Tai Chi? - it's a system of meditative exercise which can prevent and heal ailments through revitalizing and rejuvenating the vital organs of the body; through a series of postures which help to develop ones own intrinsic energy or life force. The important principle of the art is relaxation, practitioners can learn to circulate this energy known as chi (chee) through the body.
What is chi? - In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), "chi" or "qi" is the invisible life force of vital energy that flows through all living things and is thought to be inherited and also derived from food and air. According to TCM, the smooth flow of chi through the body's meridians is crucial to good health. Acupuncture, Acupressure, Chi Kung (Qi Gong) and Tai Chi are all used to improve the flow of chi.
How will it help me?
Physically, Tai Chi is conducive to longevity and good health, practitioners will develop an excellent posture, strong legs and for many this gentle exercise can help with mobility issues and recovery from illnesses or operations (such as hip, knee or other joint operations).
Mentally, regular Tai Chi practice will help students to focus or centre their minds. Through controlled breathing, concentration and the learned ability to enter a calm state of mind, students can students can learn to control stress, anger or fear.
Spiritually, we teach our classes for the primary development of the two areas above and no religious doctrine is taught in our classes. Ultimately we encourage our students to live with honour and respect for themselves and others, treating all beings with the same respect that they would hope to receive.
